The centre of the front is accentuated by a sculpted rocaille motif of undulating C-scrolls and foliage, sitting like a lively heart within the scalloped frieze. The corners rise into gracefully curling consoles, and the jambs are kept flat with a calmly moulded panel that draws attention to the carving at the centre.<\/p>\n
The arched mantel shelf gives the fireplace a stately, layered silhouette and creates a fine play of shadow along the edges. The front has been broken in the past and expertly restored, as is common with many antique fireplaces. The repair has been carried out with care and takes nothing away from the beautiful line and appearance of the whole.<\/p>\n
