An antique French fireplace in Carrara marble with recessed ornament. The marble has a soft, light-grey figuring that gives the surface movement and lets the carving show subtly.
The front is dominated by a deeply worked shell, its ornament cut deeper than usual. The mantel shelf is built up from several layers, which gives it a richer appearance.
The consoles stand at a gentle 45-degree angle and flow smoothly into the jambs, giving the fireplace an open and inviting form. The frame around the opening is finely carved and follows the undulating line of the arch, giving the opening a soft, almost organic outline.
