Renzo van Engelen
This monumental and richly worked French antique fireplace is executed in finely veined white Carrara marble and radiates the classic grandeur of the Louis XVI style. The front is exceptionally richly detailed, with a central recessed ornament flanked by floral carving, ribbon motifs and musical instruments – symbols of art and culture. The whole is framed by a refined bead moulding that runs like a cord across the front.
The consoles are set at a 45-degree angle and are deeply carved with leaf and laurel ornaments, characteristic of the French neoclassical idiom. The side panels too feature subtle carved detailing that underlines the richness of this piece. The original brass ventilation grilles, in the form of gilded vases on plinths, give the whole an extra sense of luxury and finish.
